Sounds a bit like a paradox, but hear me out: many popular breakfast choices in the United States are plain bad.

They’re filled with sugar, unhealthy fats, and lots of empty calories, which leave you feeling tired and sluggish. Not to mention how much they jeopardize your health in the long run! Bacon

While we dislike being the bearers of bad news, having bacon for breakfast isn’t doing your health any favor. Pork bacon is quite high in saturated fat and sodium, and there are plenty of studies that show how eating bacon on a daily basis can lead to heart disease and high blood pressure. In fact, one slice of pork bacon is half protein, half fat.

Bacon is also cured with a huge amount of sodium, which is definitely something you don’t want to have on a regular basis, especially if you suffer from high blood pressure.

Poptarts

A rapid breakfast option for those of you who are always on the go is this tasty dessert that is also masquerading as morning fuel. Poptarts are exquisitely high in refined sugars and fats and are filled with all sorts of artificial colors and flavors. Their lack of protein and fiber simply fails to provide the needed amount of energy, which leads to a mid-morning crash.

High-sugar instant oatmeal

So many instant oatmeal packs are loaded with sugars, which can easily spike your blood sugar levels and cause serious energy dips. Oats are generally a super nutritious source of whole grains that are wonderful for breakfast.

However, some instant oatmeal has somewhere around 12 grams of added sugar per serving. That’s quite a lot of added sugar to have before you leave for work or school for that day.

Frozen waffles

Frozen waffles can be quite high in calories, and they’re also known to provide little nutritional value. It’s true that they’re very convenient, but plenty of frozen waffles are also made with refined flour and can have added sugars and preservatives.

They also lack significant nutritional value when it comes to fiber and protein, which are very important for a balanced breakfast. Coupled with syrup and butter, they can easily become a high-calorie, sugar-laden meal.

Low-fiber breakfast cereal

Even if the cereal box says they’re loaded with vitamins, plenty of breakfast cereals are quite low in fiber and high in sugar, and that’s why they’re oftentimes considered to be an unhealthy choice to start your day with. Cereals that are too processed with minimal fiber won’t do you any favor, especially since these high-sugar cereals digest rapidly. This also causes a spike in blood sugar, which means that you feel ready to crawl back in bed by 10 AM.

Breakfast pastries

Croissants, danishes, and different other pastries are quite high in butter, sugar, and fats, which only adds so little to nutritional value and contributes a lot to calorie overload. They might seem delicious, but pastries still offer little nutritional value, are very high in calorie, and the refined carbs often contribute to rapid spikes in blood sugar.

Frozen breakfast sandwiches

Blended coffee drinks

As tasty as they might be, these beverages are nothing less than a bunch of calorie bombs waiting to wreak havoc on your weight, energy levels, and overall health. The waffles, on the other side, are generally made from refined flour, which adds another batch of sugary carbohydrate load. This meal also leads to a spike in blood sugar and can ultimately contribute to weight gain when eaten on a regular basis.
