Pan-fried chips
When it comes to overcooking foods, particularly meats, we can definitely say that it might lead to carcinogens. As a 2020 article stated, cooking meat at higher temperatures could create carcinogenic PAHs but also heterocyclic amines, known as HCAs.
These two substances could increase the risk of cancer by altering the DNA of your cells. You are way more likely to overcook foods when you cook at higher temperatures, such as when grilling, barbecuing, or even pan-frying.
The Food and Drug Administration also explained that overcooking starchy foods, such as potatoes, could increase acrylamide formation. If you want to stay away from developing carcinogens that might develop from high-heat cooking, consider using other cooking methods that are more recommended and less damaging, such as poaching, pressure cooking, baking, roasting, and even slow cooking.

It makes me VERY Angry thatitdered fish was mentioned!! People can eat completely healthily without contributing to the death and suffering of animals.
Lighten up Colleen.
If God didn’t want us to eat animals why did he make them out of meat? OR, the non-religious take on this: Why are our teeth made to rip meat apart. The design of our human teeth show that we are omnivores. That means we were designed or evolved to eat meat as well as vegetables. Animals don’t have to suffer. The solution is to kill them as quickly and humanely as possible. The fact is that most food providing meat animals today would never have been born if we humans didn’t eat meat. That is what they are raised for.
Our teeth are designed to rip meat??? Perhaps our teeth look like felines or canines??? Their teeth are designed to rip meat, not ours. But if you want to eat meat, that’s your choice but not because we humans need it, there are other sources of protein, even healthier sources of protein, but eating meat is a choice you make. And there’s people who tolerate it better than others. Most get sick over time, specially if factory farm meat is consumed. Besides killing is killing, fast, slow either way is killing. Some quit eating meat because of ethical reasons, some because of religion and some because in general it suppose to be healthier, so it’s always a choice.
Agreed. Much of the risk may be offset through preparation. For example, multiple cocktails consumed before, during and after cooking enhances your experience and proper relaxation as caused by the cocktails is known to decrease your cancer risk. As far as cooking goes, the more alcohol consumed by everyone, it seems my cooking improves substantially.
You have all your info wrong, please double check every single point in your coments. For example human teeth are not designed for tearing meat. If you compare a carnivore’s teeth with human’s teeth you’d see the difference right away, we don’t have “fangs” either. And this is only one example.
Ok Karen
In the wild, animals kill and eat other animals all the time. Go hug a tree and get over it.
I totally agree with you Colleen.
What is thatitered?
Megan. At age 79 and having eaten all the proscribed foods except yogurt in great quantities and remaining incredibly healthy you just sucked the air out of the room.
Wow! This is a problem! I can’t eat any more of my favorites! That is a mental breakdown to stop these foods!
My mom lives on cheerios and ensure. The rest of the cabinets are empty. At 82 she moves faster than most kids today
I feel that it’s all about moderation. Eating the occasional sweetened yogurt or side of fries isn’t means to panic to ban them 100 percent.
Personally I prefer quality of life on my own terms rather than longevity.
Does any else find it shocking that after more than 100 years of medically knowledge of cancer there is not a single attempt to cure it ?
The focus is only on the same, the problem but not the solution.
The title is misleading in the first place!
“Cancer *causing* snacks” sounds both definitive & damning. However, in the article’s first paragraphs it’s clearly stated that cancer isn’t just one disease, with one simple, singular cause. Further, it’s clear that medical research scientists *don’t know* what causes most cancers!
Rather than fear-mongering about the dangers of specific foods which, yes, if consumed in excess could *contribute* to a person developing cancer, it would have been better to reinforce the idea that healthy and MODERATE dietary & lifestyle habits can go a long way toward preventing chronic diseases, including some (though not all) cancers!
And why not point the finger at the food industry in general, since overly-processed
foods (especially “snack foods”) are the worst offenders, not normal, whole, natural foods
that just happen to be COOKED, not raw!
This article dropped the ball. The blame is with the snack and processed food industry. The
chemicals, sweeteners, unhealthy synthetic additives—those are the real culprits and prime suspects as the “causes” of cancers and chronic diseases!
Perhaps due to public and private expenditures, greed and societal beliefs about health care to the general population, at some degree, the medical practices continue failing to use a more individualized approach instead of a generalized one.
Not all human beings respond the same way to any edibles or medications, besides certain medical conditions present in the person.
How come you tell an underweight, very underweight or skinny person not to eat what his or her body needs and would benefit from?
How come would I tell someone not to take a certain medication because I have a negative reaction from?
We hardly need a great deal of food to survive. Actually we could all eat a lot less than we consume. Except for growing children we should think of ourselves as hydroponic plant, where basic nutrients in liquid form, placed in a glass of water, added to a small amount of solids with collagen and measured roughage, could carry us quite well.
I agree with Colleen. Animals can bring joy. They are companions. God created them. He created plants we should not eat too. Animals should not be used for testing. There’s a doctor that said that. I agree with him.
Megan,
I think that you will have the most boring life in
humankind.
