How to Order Smart at Steakhouse Chains: 6 Most Unhealthy Choices Revealed

Do you know what unhealthy steakhouse dishes are?

Maybe once every few months you feel more fancy and want to dine out in town. One of the most popular choices is steakhouses, but you should know about some unhealthy steakhouse dishes and avoid them.

There are many steakhouse chains all across the United States, and they have varied menus and prices, so you have a lot to choose from. But when we have such a wide variety in front of us, we might find it difficult to make a choice, and this is how we end up buying the most popular items from the menu. But are they the best option available?

But as with any other restaurant, steakhouses have their nutritional disadvantages. Authentic American cuisine dishes taste great, and you want to eat them once in a while, but at the same time, it is good to be aware and avoid those dishes that are known to be the most unhealthy ones.

1. Outback Steakhouse – Bloomin’ Onion

Outback Steakhouse is one of those places where people like to go out for a family dinner. They are a great choice, but they also serve some unhealthy steakhouse dishes that you should skip if you cherish your health and well-being.

One of the unhealthy steakhouse dishes is their Bloomin’ Onion. It is crispy, the taste is immaculate, and it is also made from real onion, but there are some tings that make it one of the worst things you can choose from their menu.

What might be surprising is that this is not even a main dish; it is an appetizer, but one that is full of empty calories—1,620 calories, to be exact. So, if this is just the appetizer and has so many calories, add the entrée and your drink, and you have already exceeded the healthy amount of calories you were supposed to eat that day!

What is even worse is that all of these calories are not even nutritious as they come from fats in the oil that is used for cooking. Even more, the 4,140 milligrams of sodium are another reason that should make you pass on this dish.

2. The Capital Grille – Signature Cheeseburger

When eating at a steakhouse, a good old burger is a safe choice, and this is why many prefer it instead of ordering a steak. When you go to the Capital Grille and you want to eat the classic choice, this would be the Signature Cheeseburger.

Unfortunately, even if you love it and can’t wait to order it every time you go to this steakhouse, nutrition experts have some things to say about this dish. It is one of the unhealthy steakhouse dishes, and if you know that you have health risks, it might be a good idea to not order it in the first place.

For example, this burger has 1,750 milligrams if you don’t want any modifications, and this is 75% over the daily recommended amount of sodium! Usually, the American Heart Association recommends eating 2,300 milligrams per day.

Hopefully, if you love this place, there is no need to despair because their menu has many better options. Just steer clear of the Signature Cheeseburger, as this is one of the unhealthy steakhouse dishes that anyone who is concerned for their health and diet should avoid.

3. LongHorn Steakhouse – Texas Brisket Nachos

Do you like brisket, right? Do you also like nachos? Okay, then what would you think if we combined them? This is possible, and you can find such a dish at the LongHorn Steakhouse. It’s called Texas Brisket Nachos.

From the name, it sounds amazing, but what do nutritionists think about it? Well, it is one of the unhealthy steakhouse dishes, and this is why you should probably stay away from it as much as possible.

First of all, this dish is designed to be shared. Eating something like this alone means 2,040 calories, and this is too much for a single meal. 2,000 calories are the average calorie intake for a person per day.

These nachos have a total of 45 grams of saturated fat, 130 grams of fat, and 4,070 milligrams of sodium. The American Heart Association recommends a maximum of 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, and in case you have any heart or circulatory diseases such as hypertension, you should not consume more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day.

When deciding which appetizer to get, try to focus on something healthier, such as stuffed mushrooms, salads, and sometimes even wings.

4. Sizzler – BBQ Ribs

We know that ribs are the staple of any steakhouse, but they are also some of the most unhealthy steakhouse dishes. And now not all ribs are this dangerous, but the ones from Sizzler are especially the BBQ Ribs.

What makes these delicious ribs so bad is the high content of sodium. They have tons of salt, which is much over the admitted daily limit. The BBQ Ribs have 20,050 milligrams of sodium, and the worst part about the Sizzler Ribs is that any other option from their menu has at least 19,500 milligrams of sodium. This is why we advise you not to eat them.

Eating too much sodium leads to cardiovascular problems and can cause heart attacks and strokes. Be careful about what you consume!

5. Claim Jumper – Chicken Pot Pie

Chicken pot pies are not considered by any means a healthy food, and it is easy to see why. The Claim Jumper Chicken Pot Pie is one of the most unhealthy steakhouse dishes, mainly due to its high calories and huge amount of fat.

But what makes this dish so bad? Well, we can start with the buttery pastry crust, which alone has too much fat, and then we have to mention the filling. This filling is made with lots of heavy cream and butter, which tastes incredible but adds even more fat to this dish.

This chicken pot pie has 2,120 calories and a fat content of 140 grams. Besides this, what also makes this menu item one of the most unhealthy steakhouse dishes is its high sodium content: 3,550 milligrams, which, again, is more than an adult should consume in a single day. Consuming this much sodium will often lead to various health problems.

6. Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse – Cowboy Ribeye

Yes, this seems like a good ribeye choice, as it is packed with protein and does not contain any sugars or carbohydrates. This is amazing for most keto diets, and this is why many people consider this dish appropriate for them.

Unfortunately, in reality, the Cowboy Ribeye has too much fat, and even more concerningly, a big part of this fat is saturated fat and the rest is trans fat. More precisely, there are 147 grams of fat, of which 6 grams are trans fats and the rest are saturated fats.

Also, we are talking about red meat. A serving size of red meat means 3 to 4 ounces, but when we go out to a steakhouse, many of us tend to eat more than this in one sitting. What you can do when ordering this ribeye is share it with another person. And if you feel like there is not enough food, order a veggie side dish instead of the classic fries.
