Maybe you think you are not eating salt at all, but are you sure? You might say yes, but have you ever heard about the foods that have stealth salt? Yes, there are lots of foods that have a lot of salt, and we are eating them without being aware of this. Do you ever salt your grilled corn or soup or that frozen pizza? Most probably not! But they taste salty, right?

Researchers say that 75% of all the sodium we consume comes from processed food and not from the salt we add to the food. If you want to find low-sodium products, look for those in which sodium is just 5% or less of the daily value. Every item that says 20% or more is already high in sodium and should be avoided. The goal should be 1,500 to 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day.

2. Alcohol

A beer seems like the best thing about a BBQ or a sports event for many Americans, but these days should be gone because we can’t talk about the worst foods without including alcohol. Maybe this is not food at all, but beverages containing alcohol are so bad for you that it is impossible for us to not mention them on this list.

The way our bodies metabolize alcohol changes as we age, and in the end we become prone to the negative aspects of drinking. We are always affected by them, but after 50 years old we will feel even worse.

Besides the neurological impact, drinking alcohol after 50 can interact with medication, increase the risk of falling, and lead to severe dehydration.

3. Fried foods

Try to check all the labels and see if there are any hidden sugars. But never eliminate fruits from your diet. Yes, they have sugars, but not as much as various treats, and they also have numerous benefits for your health.

So, if you crave something sweet, go with the fruits. Maybe a smoothie or simply eat them raw. Fruits are amazing because they are packed with vitamins and offer you the fiber you need.

5. Ultra-processed snacks

Most of the time, the food we eat is processed. If you are not living on a farm, getting unprocessed food is not easy, but what you should really be careful about are the ultra-processed foods.

Diced vegetables, bagged greens, or nuts—they all are processed foods, but they offer convenience, and this is why we like them so much. Also in the same category, we find canned tomatoes and frozen fruits and vegetables. But this is an amazing way to enjoy fresh produce without living on a farm. They are not the problem here.

The worst processed foods are those that are ready-to-eat, such as sweetened yogurt, frozen pizza, ketchup, cake mixes, or snacks in general. Most of these foods are empty calories because they don’t have nutrients, and they also have a ton of calories.

Try to replace the ultra-processed foods with nuts like shelled almonds, peanuts, and pistachios in the shell. You can never go wrong with them, and they are very calorie-dense and nutritious.
