Cancer is a group of diseases distinguished by abnormal cell growth, which can spread to other parts of your body. We are all aware of its emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual toll. But did you know that the American Cancer Society now reports the chances of getting cancer are currently 1 in 2 for men and 1 in 3 for women?

These alarming numbers indicate a growing epidemic in our country, but it isn’t time to throw in the towel just yet. The American Association for Cancer Research has said that over half of cancers can be avoidable. So it seems that we need to look at what we are subjecting our bodies to find out what might be at the root of the cancer epidemic.

Several factors greatly influence cancer risk, but none more so than food and nutrition. Cancer-causing foods are probably already in your everyday diet, and you don’t even realize it. Many studies have linked some commercially available foods to cancer due to the harmful, cancer-causing chemicals they include. Let’s take a look at the 11 we’ve found.

1. Foods Labeled “Diet”

If you see words like “diet,” “low-fat,” “fat-free,” or “sugar-free,” you should know that those missing items are probably being replaced with chemicals. Diet foods are full of artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors,… and probably more. As the National Cancer Institute points out, one artificial sweetener, Saccharin, was determined to cause cancer in lab rats.

The three most widely used dyes, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Red 40, are tainted with known carcinogens. Another coloring, Red 3, has been acknowledged for years by the Food and Drug Administration to be a carcinogen, yet it can still be found in many products. If you choose the regular version of these foods, but in moderation, it’s a better option than the diet versions and will help you avoid cancer-causing foods.

  1. Well, this has certainly been an informative article. Thank you for providing it. A good share of the foods mentioned are ones that I’ve eaten for years never suspecting that they can cause such havoc! I’ll definitely be making some changes in what I eat and drink.

    1. I’m with you, who would have thought? This is so sad what they are doing with our food. Unfortunately too late for me, I’ve already gotten cancer. I always believed it was the foods that did it and now I know it was 😡

      1. There are so many options!!! Fresh fruits carefully washed and dried are great for starters. Good protein (Beef and chicken and fresh salmon) are great with a big salad with a homemade lemon juice /olive oil/salt and pepper dressing.

      2. Stevia is a natural, plant-based sweetener of fair cost. It is NOT a chemical sweetner.

        It does NOT cause massive — if any — Insulin response for people with or without diabetes, nor does it cause cancer or have carcinogenic qualities.

        Available in packets and bulk, store brands of Stevia, example being Walmart Great Value or others, are the same product and same good quality, at lower prices.

      3. Whole, fresh foods. I grew up with a garden so straight from ground foods are best. Whole fruits as well. Cook actual meals and watch how things are cooked- baked instead of fry and if frying is a must, watch what kind of oil is used a better yet, use an air fryer. Eat more vegetarian meals and decrease red meats- our bodies aren’t really meant for meat anyway. Play around with different ethnic foods too. Good luck!

      4. I am a type one diabetic with celiac disease and epilepsy. I have decreased meat intake. Use stevia, a natural sweetener. Decreased salt intake. And eating fresh fruits and vegetables that are organic. With change I have lost 26 pounds, decreased insulin from 85 units/day to 45 units/day in insulin pump. Have had t1d for 23 years.

      I encourage you to continue posting as much of the good information for all of us but specially for many who dont believe that all the suffering they expetiencing is mostly for the wrong foods and bad habits we have.

  3. Over the past 10-12 years, I have learned of the harm of many on your list, and made the change to avoid them. This means paying more for most of the healthier options, but well-worth to avoid cancer. I am 79, and will now STOP consuming microwave popcorn, potato chips, and french fries!

  4. make a list at the top of your shopping list of what to avoid. You won’t be able to avoid them all the time but any reduction has to be good. Start thinking about cooking vegs and eating fruits from their natural state. May take a bit longer but the return on that investment of time is well worth it, it seems to me.

  5. THE SKY IS FALLING ! ! That’s the take I get. I’m in the age range that “shouldn’t be alive today”, yet I’ve eaten almost all of the “cancer causing foods” all my life. We, as a species, are carnivores. That means meat, generally red. GMO’s are what has kept this world from extreme famine. Wheat’s (and many other grains)that are drought and insect repellent, farmed fish that, yes, in SOME areas of the world are bad, but here, in the U.S., are regulated for disease, overcrowding, carcinogen causing agents, and the list goes on. Just once I would like people to think before they automatically believe all the total garbage being spewed about what we eat is killing us. Remember, Aspirin will save your life, but if you take too much of it, it will kill you.

    2. Kaff,kafff—When did humans become carnivores? Tell that tall tale to the millions of Vegetarian Hindus!! Tell that to the Seventh Day Adventist Health System that promotes a plant based diet for longevity! Tell that to the Mayo Clinic Research Dept. that discovered that folate from leafy green plants destroys cancer cells!

      Further—I suggest you tell it to your Creator, who designed us to eat the fruits of “the Tree of Life”. Feel foolish yet? Or do you still stand by your crude blurting?? If you REALLY believe you are a carnivore—then I must assume you have large fangs and long sharp claws and do your own killing—and then rip open the abdominal cavity of your fresh kill and gorge on the hot juicy offal?? Do you defend your kill from other predators? Do you lap up the blood, and crunch on the bones?

      Perhaps you eat old, processed flesh from the factory farms? And then heat it up to kill the filth and pathogens growing on it? After rigor mortis, the kill becomes carrion! So, Bwana, oh mighty carnivore—you never eat your own fresh kill, raw? Never? Then you are NOT really a bold carnivore—you are a lowly, cowardly, skulking CORPSE SCAVENGER!!

      I think it’s much more noble to browse and graze and OH SO much more gentle and hygienic. Not to mention conducive to longevity!

  6. What a GREAT GUIDELINE of fast foods, and beverage’s what not to eat on a daily basis, toxicity,not aware of causing certain illnesses..you’ve given us to FOLLOW..for me is a true blessing offered! Sanford

    1. I totally agree on the fact that eating healthy is very pricey!!! I eat a lot of salmon, however it’s always farm raised because the wild is $20.00 a pound!! Salmon is expensive without buying the wild!!! I guess we should just all eat berries and fruit without any preservatives. It’s hard to grow your own food when you live in the city and work for a living!! I can see giving up French fries, chips, soda, cookies etc…but then what kind of life is that? Everything in moderation and you may still get hit by a bus!! Just saying?

  7. So why are all these poisons being allowed in our food? If they know how bad it is, it shouldn’t used. I’ve been eating this crap all my life , not aware of how harmful everything is.

  8. Is there a balance that can be struck here? That is, if we eat some of these foods, is there something we can also eat to counteract it? Obviously, if we eat too much of it, we’re at risk. However, if we eat these foods infrequently, is there a counter-balance that can negate effects of them? Seems that a lot more people are having more dietary problems than they used to have.   9. Well, I’ve consumed everything on the list. So what now? I’ve begun cutting back on many of the foods listed. Does the FDA have a list of these foods? Are they not regulating what is being allowed on our shelves for consumption. Guess it’s just a free-for-all survival of the fittest.

  10. Most of these foods are well known as cancer causing. I question the GMO’s.
    I thought genetically modified meant
    It was modified at the “genetic level”, seeds, growing methods etc. I have never heard that food was “ injected” … makes me doubt that one as being accurate.

  12. I knew someone who was trying to lose weight and all they ate for a long time was microwave popcorn. he lost weight but he also developed cancer that spread and he ended up dying. I always thought it was the microwave popcorn. now I know it was.

  13. “Just don’t eat” anything, and you will avoid cancer. You can’t eat a single food item anymore without being told that it causes cancer and/or heart disease. Enough of this nonsense already! Eat everything in moderation, and that is being realistic. Just eat nuts and organic fruits? Who in blazes is going to do that??? Get real here.

  15. If someone gives you poison and you die then they can be charged for your death. What about the people who provide the food with carcinogens for public consumption? What then? When consumed then cancer is detected in your body who then is criminally responsible for the disease and death? It is an eye opening situation isn’t it?

  17. Get the government to stop tainting our food. The food when I was growing up tasted so much better and it was better for you. You can blame the government for all this. I also believe that they have the cure for Cancer and will not release it because it is too big of a money maker for Pharmaceutical companies, Dr’s. Hospitals’ Ins. and many more corrupt companies and Politicians .

    1. I agree with you, Debbie. It’s all about money and greed! I, too, believe the cure to cancer is known but cancer is a big money maker. This is why US citizens, who can afford it, go to other countries. We should be learning to grow our own food and teaching our children and grand-children. (Our lives and body are surrounded by too many chemicals and toxins.) “Please give us wisdom, Lord. Amen.”

  18. Thanks for sharing the list! But what really bothers me and everyone is……………..Why are these cancer causing foods on the market? Why do we have the FDA, USDA and HHS agencies? Who are they serving? The government stopped paying farmers for growing healthy foods, but the government pays other countries for providing us with poisonous foods. I think we need more women leaders on Capitol Hill who are natural born caretakers in their families. They have always cared for families. Very few politicians care about the health, safety and well being of their citizens. We don’t stand a chance in trying to live a healthy and safe life. If we don’t die from the poisonous foods we eat, then we’re afraid to go out into our communities because of the out of control gun violence!! What happened to the days of eating good and living free? Everyone was living happy and peaceful!

  19. This article confirms some things I have read about for years that are not healthy – foods like red meats, white sugar, white flour, canned foods. Beginning to hear more about processed foods being unhealthy.
    Such a shame that the USA allows so much foods that seem to be making people sick.

  21. if in doubt about safety of fruits and veggies and can’t afford organic. Ex. peppers top of the dirty list. buy organic once save all seeds and grow your own. Patio or porch large containers are great for peppers and tomatoes.also you can scrub first, peel second and then use the fruit. Also with anything, wash your hands first.☺
