Bad sleep apnea foods: Sugar
The reason why sugar is on the bad sleep apnea foods list is because it is one of the foods that trigger inflammation. And by that, we do not mean just plain sugar that you add to your tea and coffee (though you should also consume that one in moderation), but rather refined carbohydrates, which can be found in sugar cane juice, enriched flour, sugary drinks, and corn syrup, which have a high level of added sugars.
These refined carbs are simple in nature, and while they do have a high caloric intake, they have little to no nutritional advantages, which in turn leads to high blood sugar and extra weight gain, which can lead to other health and sleep apnea issues.
What’s more, foods with high amounts of sugar can make your blood glucose levels spike and increase too much, which can lead to other health issues. Diets that include a lot of sugar can lead to obesity, which in turn can actually cause sleep apnea due to the mess the glucose spikes create in your system.
To make sure you are not accidentally consuming too much sugar, make sure you check the labels on your foods, even when it comes to staple foods like bread, rice, and pasta. A lot of them have enriched flour, which means that they are high-glycemic. You should aim to use whole grains or products that do not have enriched grains or enriched flour!
