Fish is good, right? Why is fish on the list of the most unhealthy proteins? Indeed, fish is generally healthy because it has so many nutrients, and maybe the most important one is omega-3 fatty acids. But nutrition warns us that not all seafood and fish are created equal, and because of this, we should be careful with our choices.

Swordfish is not a great choice because, even if it is full of nutrients, it also has one of the highest mercury concentrations, 0.995 ppm! The FDA advises pregnant or nursing women to eat between 8 and 12 ounces of a variety of seafood each week from sources with reduced mercury content.

Consuming foods that have high levels of mercury can lead to various unwanted health effects. This chemical can affect the brain, and it is linked with the development of Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and anxiety.

But this doesn’t mean avoiding fish forever. You can choose alternatives that are lower in mercury, such as salmon and shrimp.
