5. Cheese

Speaking of meals with cheese, this is another food you should avoid if you have elevated cholesterol levels. According to the National Cancer Institute, cheese is the No. 1 food source of cholesterol-raising fat in the American diet.

This food is high in cholesterol, but as the USDA Dietary Guidelines point out, there’s no clear link between the cholesterol-packed foods that an individual eats and their blood cholesterol levels.

However, it’s known that the saturated fat in cheese is responsible for raising cholesterol levels. An ounce serving of cheese contains about 5 grams of saturated fat, depending on the type of cheese you’re having. And most people don’t just stop at a single ounce of cheese.

If you’re a cheese-lover willing to reduce consumption of the worst foods for high cholesterol, consider this a wake-up call to become more mindful of how much cheese you eat.

  1. THERE is the case for vegetarianism! Unrefined plant matter is devoid of cholesterol! No matter how you look at it, eating dead animal bodies (carrion) is a losing deal…

  2. There goes 75% of my diet. I eat almost all these foods on a regular basis. Thanks for reccomending alternatives. Time for big changes.

  3. These recommendations are way off. Anything with fake sugar like HFCS, Corn Syrup, etc. causes your cholesterol to rise. Avoid white sugar and artificial sweeteners. You can eat as much egg, steak, cheese, etc, as you want. When my husband eliminated processed “sugars” his cholesterol dropped 80 points. This was 20 years ago. I did my research online and discovered it’s the man-made sugars that cause your body to make cholesterol. He eats pork sausages, steaks, eggs, maple syrup, sucanat(sugar cane natural), honey etc. to his heart’s content.
