To avoid: Fast Food
This one was definitely one of the most predictable items on our list, even more so than processed foods. In the end, fast food can be a convenient, cheap meal, but when you end up eating too much of it, you will only cause damage to your health. Much like processed foods, the reason why they are horrible for your thyroid health is that fast food chains are required to use iodized salt when preparing their foods, which is why they do not use it that often.
The American Thyroid Association actually advises people to generally avoid restaurant foods since you cannot know if the salt they use is iodized or not. If you know yourself to have a sensitive thyroid or a history of thyroid issues in your family, it would be a good idea to be careful of how much non-iodized salt you eat.
When it comes to fast food, it is easy to tell that the iodine amount that you can find in their foods is not ideal. By comparison, a fast food hamburger patty only has 3.3 micrograms of iodine per 100 grams of food, while a non-fast food ground beef one amounts to 8 micrograms for the same amount of meat!
You’re better off making them at home!
Make sure that the salt you use at home is iodized! This is the one we recommend.
