1. Apples and oranges

Two of the foods you should never store together are apples and oranges. Why? Even though the beloved fruit combo may appear beautiful in art, the reality in the fridge is quite different. Ethylene, a ripening chemical that causes products nearby to deteriorate more quickly, is released by fruits.

If you want to prolong the shelf life of apples, keep them in the refrigerator. That applies to oranges too, but they should be kept in a mesh bag in the refrigerator (away from apples) so that air can flow around them. Oranges in plastic bags will simply go moldy.
