#4 Red Meat

Although hot dogs and hamburgers are considered staples of our culture, excessive consumption of them may be harmful to our hearts.

Red meats are abundant in saturated fat, but they also produce trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) during digestion, which has been linked to increased atherosclerosis, inflammation, and blood pressure in numerous studies.

You don’t need to eliminate all red meat from your diet if you like eating it. The AHA recommends choosing lean cuts and avoiding processed meats like burgers, hot dogs, and breakfast meats as much as possible.

According to researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, replacing one serving of red meat each day with alternative foods like whole grains, seafood, low-fat dairy, or legumes may even reduce your chance of developing heart disease by 7%.

We advise you to limit some red meats such as:

  • pork;
  • beef;
  • lamb;
  • goat.
