Processed meats are preserved by smoking, salting, curing, and even canning. On a wider spectrum, most processed meats are red, among which we refer to hot dogs, salami, sausage, ham, corned beef, and beef jerky.

While all of these are super tasty, the methods used to make them are capable of creating carcinogens. For instance, there’s a 2018 article that explains how curing meat with nitrite could form carcinogens known as N-nitroso compounds.

Smoking meat could also lead to carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAHs. Even more, another review showed how processed meat might lead to a bigger risk of developing colorectal cancer, and another 2019 review showed that the same types of meat are capable of provoking stomach cancer in humans.

Researchers mainly tried to understand to what extent a higher consumption of processed meat could be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.

  1. It makes me VERY Angry thatitdered fish was mentioned!! People can eat completely healthily without contributing to the death and suffering of animals.

    1. If God didn’t want us to eat animals why did he make them out of meat? OR, the non-religious take on this: Why are our teeth made to rip meat apart. The design of our human teeth show that we are omnivores. That means we were designed or evolved to eat meat as well as vegetables. Animals don’t have to suffer. The solution is to kill them as quickly and humanely as possible. The fact is that most food providing meat animals today would never have been born if we humans didn’t eat meat. That is what they are raised for.

  2. Megan. At age 79 and having eaten all the proscribed foods except yogurt in great quantities and remaining incredibly healthy you just sucked the air out of the room.

Wow! This is a problem! I can’t eat any more of my favorites! That is a mental breakdown to stop these foods!

  4. I feel that it’s all about moderation. Eating the occasional sweetened yogurt or side of fries isn’t means to panic to ban them 100 percent.
