Alcohol

When you drink alcohol, your liver works overtime to break down all the drinks you enjoy so much into acetaldehyde, which, yes, is a carcinogenic compound. There’s a 2017 review that proved how acetaldehyde promotes DNA damage, but also oxidative stress.

It also interferes with your entire immune function, which makes it way more difficult for your body to target both precancerous and cancerous cells. When it comes to women, it gets worse, as alcohol also increases levels of estrogen, which is linked with a higher risk for estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer.

Are there any other food choices?

I guess this is what you’re thinking of, and rightfully so. After all, what’s left to eat if all our guilty pleasures are so brutally taken away from us? Well, it seems that some foods might “go to heaven”, so to speak, in the sense that they reduce the risk of developing cancer. These foods are:

  • Fruits and vegetables: There’s a 2017 review that proves just how rich fruits and veggies are in antioxidants. These miracle compounds are able to protect your cells not only from oxidative stress but also from DNA damage.
  • Nuts: Nuts are good for reducing inflammation but also cancer risk.
  • Beans: Beans are known to be super rich in fiber, which might keep the risk of developing colorectal cancer at bay.
  • Whole grains: whole grains are oftentimes associated with a lower risk of cancer, especially quinoa and brown rice, which are great for your daily diet. They are rich in antioxidants but also in fiber.
  • Fish: Fish is great thanks to all those healthy fats called omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce the risk of developing some types of cancer by reducing inflammation.

  1. It makes me VERY Angry thatitdered fish was mentioned!! People can eat completely healthily without contributing to the death and suffering of animals.

    1. If God didn’t want us to eat animals why did he make them out of meat? OR, the non-religious take on this: Why are our teeth made to rip meat apart. The design of our human teeth show that we are omnivores. That means we were designed or evolved to eat meat as well as vegetables. Animals don’t have to suffer. The solution is to kill them as quickly and humanely as possible. The fact is that most food providing meat animals today would never have been born if we humans didn’t eat meat. That is what they are raised for.

  2. Megan. At age 79 and having eaten all the proscribed foods except yogurt in great quantities and remaining incredibly healthy you just sucked the air out of the room.

Wow! This is a problem! I can’t eat any more of my favorites! That is a mental breakdown to stop these foods!

  4. I feel that it’s all about moderation. Eating the occasional sweetened yogurt or side of fries isn’t means to panic to ban them 100 percent.
